Advancing a new narrative for statebuilding in Afghanistan
On February 25 and 26, the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at Stanford University, in partnership with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, hosted a symposium titled, "Addressing the Accountability Gap in Statebuilding: The Case of Afghanistan." This event brought together leading experts, government officials, diplomats, practitioners, and academics to examine the problems of accountability, corruption, and election fraud that have risen in the wake of international statebuilding efforts in Afghanistan.

CDDRL to host February 25 statebuilding conference featuring Ashraf Ghani
AnnouncementStanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law in partnership with the Canadian Foreign Affairs and International Trade department are hosting a symposium, Addressing the Accountability Gap in Statebuilding: The Case of Afghanistan, on February 25, 2011. The distinguished Ashraf Ghani, former Afghan Minister of Finance and 2009 Presidential Candidate, will be delivering the keynote address. This event will bring together practitioners, experts, and diplomats from Afghanistan and beyond, to share experiences and explore options to improve the contemporary practice of state-building. This conference and keynote address is open to the public.

Bob Rae speaks to CDDRL on Exporting Democracy
CDDRL, FSI Stanford NewsOn January 18, the Honorable Bob Rae, Liberal Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre and the foreign affairs critic for the Liberal Party of Canada was the featured speaker at a special CDDRL seminar. Rae addressed the Stanford community on the topic of his latest book Exporting Democracy, published in November 2010 by McClelland & Stewart.

Exploring the new, dynamic triangle among Taiwan, the U.S., and China
CDDRL, FSI Stanford NewsCDDRL Director Larry Diamond engaged in a far-reaching conversation at FSI with Jason Yuan, Taiwan's Representative to the United States, about the dynamic relationship among Taiwan, the United States, and China. Finding fertile ground for debate, the two examined democracy in Taiwan, cross-strait relations, Taiwan's economy, and prospects for the development of democracy on the mainland.

AnnouncementIn Political Change in China: Comparisons with Taiwan, CDDRL's Democracy in Taiwan program marshals commentary from leading experts on what lessons, if any, Taiwan's experience of democratization might hold for China's future. The volume was co-edited by Larry Diamond and includes a chapter by Weitseng Chen, one of CDDRL's 2007-08 Hewlett Fellows.
