Sadr must be confronted and defeated, Diamond asserts in San Francisco Chronicle analysis

Larry Diamond, coordinator of CDDRL's Democracy Program and recently an adviser to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, provides comment for an Aug. 14 San Francisco Chronicle news analysis that examines whether American and Iraqi officials should negotiate with radical Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his supporters, or crush them militarily. Many observers assert that the only way to achieve peace and stability in Iraq is by bringing radical clerics into the fold, but Diamond disagrees, saying Sadr must be confronted and defeated.
