Interview with CDDRL democracy program coordinator Larry Diamond on Iraq Study Group report
In the News: ABC, The World Today on December 7, 2006A report from the bipartisan Iraq Survey Group was released recently indicating that there truly were no ideal options at this point for the Bush administration in Iraq. The report recommended a reduction over the next 18 months in the number of US troops and a call for negotiations with Syria and Iran. CDDRL Democracy program coordinator Larry Diamond comments, "I think it's a very wise, impressive, comprehensive, learned effort. It's the best we've got. I think this is our last chance to stabilize Iraq before it slips into all-out civil war." There were also questions on whether or not the Iraqis would be able to implement necessary reforms. "So unless we put these conditions on the table, you have to make compromises, you have to assume responsibility. If we're going to continue to support this at the level we are, I don't think these compromises are going to happen. So I think this pressure is necessary to turn this situation around," commented Diamond.
