Violent turmoil erupted once again in Africa with the overthrow of President Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaire and the short-lived military coup in Sierra Leone. Oil-rich Nigeria is sinking deeper into economic destitution and political disarray as its military tightens its grip on power.
