CDDRL now accepting applications for Pre and Postdoctoral Fellowship

Announcement

The Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law is currently accepting applications from pre-doctoral students at the write-up stage and from new postdoctoral scholars working in any of the four program areas of democracy, development, evaluating the efficacy of democracy promotion, and rule of law. Applicants working at the intersection of two or more of these issue areas will receive preferential consideration. Read more »

CDDRL honors students recognized for outstanding theses

The Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) is pleased to announce that undergraduate senior honors student Yihana von Ritter was awarded The Firestone Medal for Excellence in Undergraduate Research for her outstanding thesis examining HIV/AIDS policy in Papua New Guinea. Von Ritter together with seven other students comprised the 2011 graduating class of CDDRL Undergraduate Honors Students. Read more »

Announcing the 2011-12 pre and post-doctoral fellows

Each year, CDDRL awards fellowships to four outstanding pre and post-doctoral students who are in the write-up stage or recent graduates from doctoral programs examining the fields of democracy, development, and the rule of law. Fellows spend the academic year at the Center completing their projects, participating in seminars, and interacting with the resident faculty and research staff. Read more »

Announcing the 2012 CDDRL senior honors students

The Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford University is pleased to announce the 2012 class of Senior Honors Students. This marked the first year that CDDRL is officially an interdisciplinary honors program, allowing the Center to reach beyond the traditional international relations discipline and recruit students from computer science, economics, political science, history, and beyond. CDDRL accepting applications to Senior Honors Program

Announcement

CDDRL is now accepting applications to our interschool Senior Honors program from eligible juniors focusing on democracy, economic development, and rule of law subjects in any university department. Qualified applicants will demonstrate sufficient depth and breadth of democracy, economic and social development, rule of law, and human rights or justice course work. They should hold a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 at the time they apply and must maintain this GPA throughout the program. Admitted students must be able to attend the CDDRL Honors College in Washington, DC tentatively scheduled for September 11-17. Applications are due in the CDDRL office by February 25 at 5:00 pm and students will be notified of admission to the program by March 11. Post Doctoral Fellows teach Global Justice class

Allegra McLeod, Post Doctoral Fellow for the Program on Global Justice, and Kieran Oberman, Post Doctoral Fellow for the Program on Global Justice and the Center for Ethics in Society, are seen preparing for a session of Introduction to Global Justice. Each year the program's Post Doctoral Fellows have the opportunity, as part of their appointment, to teach the Stanford course which includes recent work in political theory on global justice. The course is designed to encourage students to think critically about some of the important questions regarding such issues as global poverty, human rights, fair trade, immigration and climate change. Questions include: Do developed countries have a duty to aid developing countries? When is humanitarian intervention justified? and Is torture ever justified? Readings include Charles Beitz, Thomas Pogge and John Rawls.



Rising international stars: 2010 Draper Hills Summer Fellows on Democracy and Development

Rising leaders from a diverse group of nations in transition, including China, Russia, Ukraine, Syria, Iran, Pakistan, and Nigeria arrived on July 25 for a three-week seminar with Stanford faculty, designed to foster linkages among democracy, development, and the rule of law. Initiated by FSI's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law six years ago, the program has created a network of some 139 leaders from 62 transitioning countries. "Draper Hills Summer Fellows are innovative, courageous, and committed leaders, who strive to improve governance, enhance civic participation, and invigorate development under very challenging circumstances," says CDDRL Director Larry Diamond. The program owes much to the vision and generosity of benefactors William Draper III and Ingrid Hills, emphasize Diamond and CDDRL Deputy Director Kathryn Stoner-Weiss. Read more »

Draper Hills Summer Fellows on Democracy and Development complete training

Rising leaders from some of the world's most challenging nations, including China, Russia, Ukraine, Iraq, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, recently completed a three-week seminar at Stanford as Draper Hills Summer Fellows on Democracy and Development. This year's extraordinary fellows included members of parliament, government advisors, civic activists, jurists, journalists, international development experts and founders of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The program, now in its fifth year, seeks to foster linkages among democracy, economic development, human rights, and the rule of law, and has received generous gifts from William Draper III and Ingrid von Mangoldt Hills. Program on Global Justice/Center for Ethics in Society seek postdoctoral fellows for 2009-2010

This year we again seek two candidates for the fellowship positions. One of the fellowships will be housed entirely in the Program on Global Justice, and one will be jointly sponsored by the Center and Program: candidates for these positions should additionally have research interests in international topics. Fellows will teach one class (typically a seminar), participate in the Political Philosophy and/or Global Justice Workshops, and help in developing an inter-disciplinary ethics community across the campus.

BIOSKETCH: Larry Diamond

Larry Diamond has been appointed as a Senior Fellow in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI). Currently a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, a renowned scholar of democratization, and prolific in both editorial and policy work, Diamond is an active member of FSI's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL). He coordinates the Program on Democracy, which examines the comparative dynamics of democratic functioning and change in the contemporary world, with a particular focus on the countries of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and the post-communist world. He has also established the offshoot program, Democracy in Taiwan, in 2006, and is a central participant in the Stanford Summer Fellows Program on Democracy and Development. Read more »

Bright young stars pursue democracy and development, at home and abroad

In a 1999 article profiling six of "China's bright young stars," the New York Times described Junning Liu as "one of China's most influential liberal political thinkers." Today, sitting in a delegate-style conference room, Liu wants to add a point to Tom Heller's discussion of risk assessment and the role of law in doing business. "There are more businesspeople in Chinese prisons than dissidents," Liu says evenly, with a suggestion of a smile. "So you see--Chinese people mind the situation more than you [the foreign investors] do." Read more »

In the small group meeting with the president were 2005 CDDRL Stanford Summer Fellows Alumnae Tanya Lokshina, chairwoman of the DEMOS Center for Information and Research, and Daria Miloslavskaya, founder of the "Human Rights Hotline." Interest in democracy, economic development, and the rule of law is clearly on the rise. Just as global attention in 2005 remained riveted on establishing and protecting the fundamentals of democracy in transitioning societies--the parliamentary elections in Afghanistan, the constitutional vote in Iraq, the threat to civil liberties in Russia--these issues took on increasing prominence on the Stanford campus, for policymakers and students alike.
