Philippe Schmitter - European University Institute


Professor Philippe C. Schmitter is Professorial Fellow at the Department of Political, European University Institute in Florence. His work includes books and articles on regional integration in Western Europe and Latin America, on the transition from authoritarian rule in Southern Europe and Latin America. He has theorized about the processes of mediation between elites in the processes of transition of power. His current research focuses on the creation of a common European polity, on the consolidation of democracy in Southern and Eastern European countries, and on the possibility of post-liberal democracy in Western Europe and North America. Professor Schmitter holds a degree from the Graduate Institute for International Studies of the University of Geneva, and a doctoral degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
